This is a pretty dismal picture. They ate and slept and prepared for death. Their hope was and had been in their strength. These were all strong men who were left, but they still prepared for death. Think for a moment how the story would be different if they had God with them. Think about how their thoughts would be different. I’m sure that you can think of many possible different endings, if they had put their faith in God. But, the only ending that they could think of was death.
