What afflictions do you think Nephi saw in his day?
Nephi says that he has been highly favored of the Lord because he has “a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God.” Are you favored of the Lord, why or why not?
Nephi, because he felt favored of the Lord desired to make a record of his proceedings in his days. Your writing in your scripture journal is like a record of your proceedings. I hope you enjoy writing down your thoughts and inspirations. The Holy Ghost will guide you in the same manner that he guided Nephi.

1 Nephi 2:14
In this verse Lehi was full of the Spirit and spoke to Laman and Lemuel with power. Laman and Lemuel’s frames, or bodies, shook, so great were the things that Lehi spoke unto them. The verse says that Lehi confound them. This means that Laman and Lemuel knew that their father was speaking the truth and they couldn’t deny it. Because of this they did as he had commanded him. Think about this in your own life. Do you want to obey the commandments because you are confounded and so feel obligated to obey or do you want to obey the commandments out of a love for God? Don’t write down your answer. As you follow Laman and Lemuel through their lives, you will see that they have a hard time keeping commandments. The reason for this is because they didn’t obey out of a love of God. Reread 1 Nephi 2:12 and think about what happens when you don’t obey out of a love for God.
1 Nephi 2:16
